Bay Area Trip
May 23, 2001

Today was a low-key day; we met with Jay Goetting of The Napa Valley Register, and spoke about his upcoming three-part story concerning Napa's ten unsolved murders. Since the Zodiac figures into the darker side of Napa's history, he will apparently touch on the case, but we won't know to what extent until it's published. The one case we spoke most about was that of Anita Elizabeth Andrews, who was murdered on July 10th, 1974, the same day a story was published in the Register ("Another Chronicle Letter From Zodiac," pp. 6,7) concerning the receipt of Z's last authenticated communication (the Red Phantom letter, mailed July 8th, 1974). She was murdered in Fagiani's, a bar her family owned and operated, located at 813 Main Street, Napa, just a few blocks from the Napa Car Wash at 1231 Main where, almost five years before, Z made his phone call to Napa PD seventy minutes after the stabbing at Lake Berryessa. Considering the timing and location of the murder, I've always wondered if Z were responsible. The two composites of the presumed killer looked remarkably like the Lake Berryessa composite, which made me wonder about Z's involvement all the more. We were also fortunate to meet with L. Pierce Carson for a short time, who wrote some of the early Z stories for the Register. Afterwards, we retired to a landing of sorts located near Napa Creek to discuss the past few days' events. The final pic is of Napa Creek flowing under Pearl Street; the other side of the street is where the Napa Car Wash was located until about 1977 or 1978.
